Fisheries and Fish

Fishing is an extremely competitive business that relies heavily on the responsible management of fish stocks to ensure a consistent supply. As a member of the Pollock Conservation Cooperative, American Seafoods Group LLC is working to ensure that fishery resources will continue to be healthy and sustainable over the long—term.

The Cooperative replaces the so—called “race for fish,” Olympic style approach that rewards vessels which fish the fastest. Now we, and the other members of the Cooperative, have agreed voluntarily to divide the allowable pollock harvest among us; improving quality, value and full utilization of the catch. By doing this we have eliminated the wasteful “race for fish” and made it possible to more fully utilize the nation’s fishery resources, and to improve the quality and value of our seafood products.

We hope this innovative agreement will spur other fisheries to make similar changes for the long—term sustainability of fishery resources.
